Identity in Christ: Knowing Who You Really Are
Who are you?
It’s a question we all wrestle with quietly, constantly.
Not the version you present to the world, not what your job title says, not what your past screams at you in your weakest moments.
The world tries to define us by performance, appearance, mistakes. But none of that truly answers the question. Because until you know who you are in Christ, you’ll always be reaching for worth in all the wrong places.
When you truly know who you are in Him, your confidence becomes steady, your worth is no longer up for debate, and your life begins to align with the truth of God’s Word. You stop performing for approval and start walking in peace.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
What does it really mean to find your identity in Christ?
It means your worth no longer depends on your past, your performance, or people’s opinions. It means you’re no longer defined by shame, comparison, or confusion.
When Jesus saved you, He gave you a new name, a new nature, and a new narrative. And the more you root your life in Him, the more you’ll begin to walk in that truth.
Your identity in Christ is deeply practical and incredibly powerful.
Why Identity Matters
When your identity is unclear, everything feels unstable. You second-guess your decisions, you compare yourself to others, and you become either prideful or insecure. But when your identity is anchored in Christ, you stop searching for your worth in temporary things and start living from a place of security.
1. You Are Who God Says You Are — You Are Chosen
The loudest voice in your life shouldn’t be culture, shame, fear, or even your own insecurities. It should be God’s voice. And what He says about you? It’s unshakable.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” — Jeremiah 1:5 (NIV)
He didn’t just notice you when you got your life together. He knew you before your first breath and chose you anyway. You are not a random existence. You are intentionally designed by a God who doesn’t make mistakes.
2. You Are Not Your Past
Maybe your past is messy. Maybe you’ve worn labels like “failure,” “too much,” or “not enough.” But in Christ, those labels don’t stick anymore.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
You’re not defined by what you did or what was done to you. You’re defined by who Jesus is and what He did for you. In Him, you’re not who you used to be. You are made new.
3. You Are Fully Loved and Accepted
We often try to earn love. Perform for it. Strive for approval. But God’s love isn’t up for negotiation; it’s already been given.
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” — 1 John 3:1 (NIV)
You don’t have to beg God to notice you. He already calls you His own. Not because you’ve done everything right, but because He’s chosen to love you deeply and permanently.
4. You Are Secure, No Matter What
Life changes. People change. Feelings fade. But your identity in Christ stays solid through it all.
“For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”
— Colossians 3:3 (NIV)
You are not defined by the highs and lows of your week. You are anchored in something eternal your life is hidden in Him. That means no matter how things look on the outside, who you are in Christ remains safe, steady, and true.
5. You Are a Child of God – You Belong in the Family
You are not just God’s creation; you are His child. That means you have access to His presence, His promises, and His provision.
You’re not begging to be accepted you’ve been adopted into His family. You have a Father who knows you fully and loves you completely.
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” — 1 John 3:1 (NIV)
Look into the Word like a mirror. What does God call you? Believe it.
Let go of old names. “Unworthy.” “Too broken.” “Not enough.” Those don’t belong to you anymore.
Let your life flow from identity, not for identity.

What truth about who you are in Him do you need to start believing?
